Egg Donor Selection Criteria

The Indian Council of Medical Research has instituted the following guidelines for oocyte donor selection:

  1. The age of the donor must not be less than 21 or more than 35 years.
  2. The individual must be free of HIV and hepatitis B and C infections, hypertension, diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, and identifiable and common genetic disorders such as thalassemia.
  3. The blood group and the Rh status of the individual must be determined and placed on record.
  4. Other relevant information in respect of the donor, such as height, weight, age, educational qualifications, profession, colour of the skin and the eyes, and the family background in respect of history of any familial disorder, must be recorded.

Oocyte Donor Selection process:

Oocyte Donor selection process is two step process which involves donor investigations and then donor registration.

Oocyte Donor Investigations:

Oocyte donors need to undergo the following investigations:

  1. Blood group and Rh status
  2. Complete blood picture:
    1. Hb
    2. Total RBC count
    3. Total WBC count
    4. Differential WBC count
    5. Platelet count
    6. Peripheral smear
  3. Random blood sugar
  4. Blood urea / Serum creatinine
  5. SGPT
  6. Routine urine examination
  7. HBsAg status
  8. Hepatitis C status
  9. HIV status with date of the tests done (1)
  10. Hemoglobin A2 (for thallasemia) status
  11. Any other specific test (2)


  13. Height
  14. Weight
  15. Colour of skin
  16. Colour of hair
  17. Colour of eyes


  19. Pulse
  20. Blood pressure
  21. Temperature
  22. Respiratory system
  23. Cardiovascular system
  24. Per abdominal examination
  25. Other systems



(1) To be carried out within 15 days prior to oocyte donation

(2) Any additional test carried out on the basis of the history and examination of donor


Donor Registration:

If the investigations turn out to be normal, then they are made to fill up a Donor information form in which they are required to divulge the following information:


  1. Age / Date of birth
  2. Marital status
  3. Education :
    1. Donor
    2. Spouse
  4. Occupation :
    1. Donor
    2. Spouse
  5. Monthly income
  6. Religion


  1. Obstetric history
    1. Number of deliveries
    2. Number of deliveries
    3. Other points of note
  2. Menstrual history
  3. History of use of contraceptives
  4. Medical history
  5. Family history from the medical point of view
